Chapters 30-33

What do you think was the purpose of the King and the Duke characters?  Explain your answer with exact quotes from the novel.

  1. I believe that the purpose of the king and the duke were a sort of test for Huck to over come. Through the series olf deceptions and lies Huck had to muster the courage to do what was right. For all I know the pair could have been some kind of metaphorical sense of himself on the inside of how he could have been willing to cheat people, but ignored these urges and become more mature. As stated by the duke " 'Well-I don't care if I did, I didn't do it, anyway. But you not only had it in mind to do it, but you done it.' " And when the pair had been lynched Huck was released from his old self.

  2. The king and the duke characters were in a way obstacles to help Huck use his brain and find the right path. In chapter 33, when the king and duke were tarred and feather, Huck felt pity towards them yet relieved that he wasn't associating with them and their rascality actions. The king and duke changed Huck's view on things, but they didn't change his conscience. Huck felt sorry for the king and duke and once again Huck felt like it was his fault. For example, "Well, it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor rascals." Where he felt like it was his fault he said, "So we poked along back home, and I warn't feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to blame, somehow." the purpose for these quotes showed that the king and duke didn't change his inner guilt but changed his ways.

  3. I think that the purpose of the King and the Duke characters were to actually help Huck decide what he felt and believed about slavery, even though that wasn't their intensions. Because of the King and the Duke recognizing Jim to the Phelps, Huck was going send a letter to Miss Watson telling her where Jim is staying. But then Huck started to have internal conflicts/moral dilemmas with himself because he didn't know what to do, until he realized what good Jim has been in his(Hucks) life. As a result, Huck asserted, "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up", in other words he isn't going to send the letter and he is against slavery no matter what anybody has to say. This incident shows how powerful of a person Huck really is.

The king and duke characters were a form of distraction, obstacle making huck decide which path was the best for him to take. Meaning as more time huck spends with the two frauds he realised something had to be done. As he tried to become free of them he notice his dear friend had been sold. In chapter 31, "it made me shiver. And i about made up my mind to pray; and see if i couldn't try to quit being the kind of a boy i was, and be better... I was letting on to give up sin, but away inside of me i was holding on to the biggest one of all. I was trying to make my mouth say i would do the right thing and the clean thing, an go and write to that nigger's owner and tell where he was; but deep down in me i knowed it was a lie - and He knowed it." Meaning he had seriously tried on giving Jim's where abouts but as soon as he realised it wasnt the right thing huck decided on helping his friend out.

  5. In my opinion the king and the duke characters purpose was to help Huck understand between good and bad to face and overcome the obstacle. In other words Huck learned more about slavery and knew that something had to be done. An example is "Well, it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor rascals." This quote states that Huck felt bad and guilty for what was happening. Another example of a quote is "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up". This means that he became mature enough to not send the letter because he knew that was the correct thing to do. The characters of the king and the duke throughout the last chapters helped Huck find his inner self.

  6. I don't think the King and Duke really have a purpose, I feel like they're holding Jim and Huck back from going to the north. They made the rest of the journey about them and instead of helping Huck keep his word to Jim they're making him more problems than he needs. The king has became controlling, for example when Huck and Jim were getting ready to leave on the canoe the King was questioning his loyalty by being aggressive. "Quick, then, tell us what was your idea, or I'll shake the insides out o' you!" The biggest problem the king created for Huck was selling Jim. The king's only "purpose" is to be selfish and get money, while the duke is his sidekick. Proof of the king being selfish, "Well, you can't get your nigger, that's all-so dry up your bubblering. Looky here-do you think you'd venture to blow on us? Blamed if I think I'd trust you." I also think the King has trust issues.

    1. Huck has reached a high level of maturity due to the role the duke and king play in his life. Huck has developed a good sense of judgment in (right or wrong) situations as well as having good character. The duke and king unknowingly have allowed huck to educate himself on slavery. An example of the character that has become is when Huck makes the decision to be anti-slavery by not sending the letter to Miss Watson. He quotes, "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up." That is the perfect example of the character Huck has become.

    3. I disagree i believe all characters has some purpose to the story otherwise why place them in it. Your own quote shows the king's veiw on black or african american people. But it also shows that huck cares about this person he now sees as a human being rather than a tool."Well, you can't get your nigger, that's all-so dry up your bubblering". Huck obviously cares and seeing such hate from people like his father and duke andbthe king have made him see slaves (or at least jim) as people and not animals or tools.

    4. I agree that all characters evolve around some kind of purpose in a story line. The King and Duke played an important role on Huck's life because he now is learning how to live for himself even if it wasn't what he expected. Tom and Huck had never experienced real-life "bad guys" and this event opened up their eyes to the world, realizing that right and wrong are decisions you have to make for yourself. Huck says, "Alright then, I'll go to hell" concerning the protection of his friend Jim. This quote shows that Huck is more concerned with another person's well being rather than just himself and the love of a friendship that is more than skin deep.

  7. The purops of these characters are to help Huck mature and grow as a person, yet they do this unintentionality. They do this by giving Huck the dicidion of turning in jim, or keeping him safe. Kuck knows what he wants and what is wrong, yet he looks back at all the good memories and teaching that jim has done for him. This decidion hold so much weight that it causes internal confliction and a moral delema, forcing him to choose. in the end he states, "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up" This meaning that he isnt going to let the law/athority break the promise he made to jim, or break away from what he belives is moraly correct. Personaly i see this as a sign of maturity when someone can stand by what they say and mean it till the end.

  9. The duke and king are important in Hucks maturation and strengthen his sense of right and wrong. Huck has noticed that the actions the duke and king take part in aren't ones that he wants to be involved in. The duke and king also help build the bond between Huck and Jim. Huck realizes that he is against slavery when decides not to send the letter and thinks, "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up." Huck has matured to think for himself.

  10. The King and the Duke both were disadvantages AND advantages for Huck and Jim. The advantages was that Jim and Huck were overflowed with more money than ever, and were able to relax in some ways. However, their disadvantages led to the capture of Jim by the Phelps (Jim, who was ratted out by none other than the King.) While disguised as Tom Saywer, Huck goes to saves Jim. However, when Huck and and the real Tom Sawyer ask to go to the King and the Duke's show the Phelps tell them of their fraud and that they should already be driven out of town. “No,” says the old man, “I reckon there ain’t going to be any; and you couldn’t go if there was; because the runaway nigger told Burton and me all about that scandalous show, and Burton said he would tell the people; so I reckon they’ve drove the owdacious loafers out of town before this time." (Ch. 33) Before Huck and Tom could tip them off, they were tied to the rails and left tarred and feathered. Though they met their demising deaths, Huck came to realize the sympathy for them. Even though they did wrong, Huck's conscience allows him to come to fair terms with it even though he believes it's unfair. This shows that the care for the King and the Duke truly exemplified how big of a heart Huck really has in his attempt to save them. So we poked along back home, and I warn’t feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to blame, somehow—though I hadn’t done nothing. "But that’s always the way; it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t got no sense, and just goes for him anyway. If I had a yaller dog that didn’t know no more than a person’s conscience does I would pison him. It takes up more room than all the rest of a person’s insides, and yet ain’t no good, nohow. Tom Sawyer he says the same." (Ch. 33)

I think that the Duke and the King play a very important part in the novel. For Huck, these two are an example of real life villains/thieves/liars that himself and Tom Sawyer used to dream about becoming. Like we discussed in class before, the original band of robbers that the boys tried to form in the beginning of the novel was really just a childish thought and wasn't an example of their true character. The boys liked to use their imaginations and just loved the idea of being a sneaky robber or thief. Now that Huck sees how these people act in the world, he is absolutely disgusted by it. We see that Huck has no intentions of being a "villain" in the world. Instead, we see the true character of Huck, who is a good and honest person deep down inside. I feel that Twain threw these two characters into the story for the purpose of characterizing Huck, and even Jim. It shows us the real Huck, and it also shows us the devotion Huck and Jim have to each other. Jim says that he'd rather go to Hell then turn Jim in, which is where we see the powerful connection that Jim and Huck have grown to have. The Duke and the King help to unravel all of this, serving as a crucial part to the story.

  12. I believe the purpose of the King and Duke characters were mainly to help develop Huck's mental and moral qualities. They resembled the type of person Huck didn't want to be-- a liar, cheater, and above all, a bad friend. This can be proven through Huck's attempted prayer when he says, "I was trying to make my mouth say I would do the right thing and the clean thing, and go and write to that nigger's owner and tell where he was; but deep down in me I knowed it was a lie-- and He knowed it. You cant pray a lie-- I found that out." Through this quote, it is obvious Huck doesn't want to lie and promise something he won't follow through with. In fact, he rather not lie to God and instead follow what he thinks is right and continue to help Jim escape although it might be frowned upon by society. Through Huck's decision to follow his own instincts, shows a sense of maturity that was unintentionally brought by the King and Duke.

  13. The purpose of the Duke's and the King's characters in this novel was to test Huck on doing the right thing. Huck would always let people get into his head and manipulate him to do what other people think is right, instead of listening to his own consience. In chapter 31 Huck lets us enter into his thoughts when he battles with himself on changing the way he is. "And i about made up my mind to pray, and see if i couldn't try to quit being the kind of a boy i was and be better." But once he has the power in his hands to warned the wilks about the fraud, his way of thinking matures making him make the correct decision to tell the wilks about the fraud. These two characters helped huck do the right thing.

  14. I believe the reason of the King and the Duke is to show how much Huck has grown. They helped prove if he has really gained any responsibility. In chapter 30 the Duke says to Huck, "Well, you just own up, first, that you did hide that money there, intending to give me the slip one of these days, and come back and dig it up and have it all to yourself." The Duke is trying to get an answer out of Huck to see what he plans to do. He wants to see if he can get the truth out of Huck. The Duke and King are already assuming what Huck is going to do with the money, now it is up to Huck if he is going to take a stand for himself, tell the truth and explain to. They actually helped Huck become the person he has grown to be mental and morally.

  15. I believe that the purpose of the duke and the king where to make Huck realize that at some point he has to grow up and be more responsible. The duke and king are somewhat a reflection of huke when he would tell lies and cause trouble. For example, "Well, it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor rascals… So we poked along back home, and I warn't feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to blame, somehow”. This lets you see that they actually helped Huck become a better person that he is growing to be.

  16. I think that the King and the Duke characters are a major part of how Huck has matured throughout the book. Huck starts to develop his own way of thinking instead of just listening to what other people say. When the king and the duke sell Jim, Huck decides to pray then right a letter to Miss Watson and explain everything but he couldn't. He doubts that telling her is the right or "clean" thing to do. "It was because my heart weren't right...I was playing double." Huck knew deep down that he had to decide between his own beliefs or doing something thought to be right just to be "washed clean of sin." Huck thought about it then he finally decided that he would rather help Jim out of slavery and not worry about sin or what anyone else thinks. " 'All right, then, I'll go to hell'....it was awful words, but they was said. And I let them stay said; and never thought no more about reforming" Huck chooses to follow what he thinks is right. Huck's decisions to do what he feels is right and to try do undo what the king and duke did shows how he's matured throughout his experiences with them.

  17. The King and the Duke play an important role in Huck's life and in the story. Based on their bad actions, Huck realizes he does't want to be with them. Huck speaks with Jim about what he thinks about the King and the Duke and states,"We turned it over and over, and at last we made up our minds they was going to break into somebody's house or store, or was going into counterfeit-money business, or something. So then we was pretty scared, and made up an agreement that we wouldn't have nothing in the world to do with such actions...". This explains that Huck and Jim don't want to do bad actions any more. This is the most important turning point in the story where Huck decides that he has been wrong all this time. The Kings and the Dukes purpose is to help Huck realize he doesn't wanna take place into any more criminal actions.

  18. The characters of king and the duke play very important role in Huck's life because they made him more mature through the book. They make him more considerable to other people then himself. For example " well , it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor rascals....So we poked along back home and warn't feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to blame, somehow" this demonstrate how he had mature and thinks diffenrently towards the king and the duke.

  19. The purpose of the king and duke characters was to test Huck. They had became an obstacle to Huck and he had to overcome the sins he had done to d o what was right. The fist obstacle was when Jim had been taken and the king and duke confirm that was Jim to Sila Phelps. This had caused Huck to start writing a letter to Miss.Watson. "So I got out a piece of paper and a pencil , all glad and excited and sat down and wrote...". "I studied a minute , sort of holding my breath, and sas to myself, alright then, I'll go to hell _ and tore it up". Another delima was when the duke had found Huck and asked about the raft and Jim. He started to tell Huck the truth but he had changed his mind. " I'll tell you where to find him,... A farmer by the name of Silas Ph_ and then he stopped ... I reckoned he changed his mind".

  20. The King and Duke are supposed to be there to help Huck mature and be an independent person. In my opinion I dont think they're helping out Huck instead they hold him back from doing things,   such as convincing Huck and Jim to not go to the north. In a way the King and Duke let Huck make his own decisions by allowing him to make the choice of turning in Jim. Huck is slowly maturing and realizes for himself what he needs to do."I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up." You can say that the King and Duke have made a slight difference in Hucks life by allowing him to mature and make his own decisions. Huck is against slavery and does not want to turn Jim in thats why he makes this decision independently.

  21. The purpose for the duke and the and king was to teach huck whats right and wrong and to see what he thought about slavery. Throughout the chapter they teach huck what was right and wrong. The same goes for slavery as they wanted to see how huck felt and thought about slavery. If they werent there huck would not mature and see how felt slavery."Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up" in this quote it show that huck has mature amd standing up for himself

  22. The purpose of King and the Duke characters were to help Huck out by being more responsible and also for him to think for himself. One example is when Huck was going to send a letter to Miss Watson saying where Jim was. But then Huck started to have conflicts with himself because he didnt know what to do. Then Huck started to realize that Jim has been there for him in his life. So Huck says "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself:"Alright, then,I'll go to hell"-and tore it up." By that quote you can notice that Huck is against slavery and it also shows that Huck has matured in the novel and he is standing up for himself.

  23. The purpose of the King and Duke was that when Huck saw how they were he knew to be the opposite. It was because of then Huck found himself in the situations that also presented him with the choice of whether to be a better person or not. For example when Huck is deciding if he should send a letter to Miss Watson which the location of her run away slave Jim was stated. Huck then goes on to say, "...I'll go to hell"-and tore it up". In choosing not to send that letter he may have saved Jims life which further proves that the King and Duke have made Huck a better person.

  24. The purpose of the King and Dukes characters were to enable Huck into becoming a better individual. During the King and the Dukes fraudulence, Huck was a mere bystander finally grasping a sense of right and wrong. When Huck was faced with the dilemma of either giving up his runaway nigger friend, Jim, back to Miss Watson or letting him be a slave amongst strangers, this morality kicked in. For instance, "I was letting on to give up sin, but away inside of me I was holding on to the biggest one of all." In this excerpt, Huck's inner conflict is reiterated, he finally determines to do what is right by his conscience, not by law. This newly found integrity is all from being associated with the King and the Duke.

The purpose of the King and the Duke in this story is to serve as a life lesson to Huck. Throughout their time together, Huck is shown what happens when you try to make easy money without conscience. The King and the Duke where run out of Arkansaw after their third "Royal Nonesuch" performance. Also, Huck learns from them that lying all the time is not a good way to lead life: " and yet here's a case where I'm blest if it don't look to me like the truth is better and actuly safer than a lie." Huck pays attention to their flawed moral and eventually gives them the slip and hopefully he has learned from these two crooks.

  26. The reason for Duke and the King is to show how much Huck has matured throughout the story. Another significant reason that they are in the story is for them to show Huck the morals of life. In chapter 30 the Duke tells Huck, "Well, you just own up, first, that you did hide that money there, intending to give me the slip one of these days, and come back and dig it up and have it all to yourself." The whole idea of the situation was that he was trying to get Huck to confess to something in regards to stealing or hiding the money. They are a big reason why Huck has become the person that he is today.

  27. I think that the reasons that the Duke and king characters are in the story to make Huck grow as a person by learning from them as they try to make easy money without feeling bad that they are ripping people off and Huck sees this as being morally wrong. These characters help Huck mature as a person throughout the story as it says, "Well, it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor rascals… So we poked along back home, and I warn't feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to blame, somehow." Huck learns a life lesson from these two that will hopefully make him a better person.

  28. The purpose of the king and duke characters was to show huck the difference between right and wrong. He grows more and more as he learns from these two. When huck said "all right then I'll go to hell"-and tore it up. Huck finally realized that he was doing the right thing by helping Jim and tearing up that letter. Huck has grown from the king and the duke by choosing for himself what was right and what was wrong about turning in his friend, Jim.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The purpose for the King and the Duke were to further develop Huck's conscience. Since the beginning of the novel, Huck has been having issues with what he thinks is right and what his conscience is telling him to do. In the situation with the Wilks sisters, Huck decides to tell the truth about the rapscallions. This shows his growth in morals and sense of right and wrong. And when the two frauds sell Jim for forty dollars, Huck has to decide between letting Jim go and accept his fate, or steal him back. He has an argument with himself over what to do so that he comes out okay. He is afraid of committing the sin of stealing Jim back but he knows that that's what's right and so finally, after much inner turmoil, he says "All right, then, I'll go to hell". The Duke and King inadvertently placed Huck in this situation. And their purpose was also to expose Huck to different kinds of people and personalities. When Huck realizes the type of people the King and Duke are, he decides, "I didn't want no trouble with their kind. I'd seen all I wanted to of them, and wanted to get entirely shut of them."

  30. The Duke and King's role in the story was to show Huck how to mature and chose right form wrong. Huck was torn between the decision of return his African-American friend to his slave owner or continuing on his journey. For instance when Huck was writing the letter to the slave owner and then he changed his mind and said "Alright, I'll go to hell-and tore it up." This means that he has matured and he is doing what he thinks is the right thing.

  31. The purpose of the King and Duke was to portray the bad behavior Huck could later achieve if he continued his bad ways. Since chapters before though we've noticed Hucks maturity along problems as he starts doing the right thing. During chapters 30 and 33 theirs a problem Huck has. The problem is Jim is gone and some man sold him out for money. Huck has to decide if he should tell Miss Watson about Jim and lead him back to slavery or steel him back so they booth can be free again. Huck says, "All right, then, I'll go to hell" and he decides on saving Jim. This again shows how Huck has grown as person of good. Huck does not want to fallow his dads and the King and dukes steps. Huck wants to do the right things.

    1. I completely agree with you,the Duke and King were a perfect way to show how much Huck has matured since the beginning of the book. They're to show that though Huck came from an abusive, drunk father, he still has some morals and knows what's right from wrong. Huck wants to be a good person and do good and not be anything like his father.

  33. The King and the Duke are important in the book because they bring the turning point in Hucks character. Before the introduction of the King and the Duke Huck had not really shown that he was strong enough a person to do the right thing and have a back bone to confront wrong. Huck and Jim both have done wrong after wrong and Huck's downfall since his stay with his dad continued until this point. The King and the Duke push Huck to new limits and force him to man up. Huck now knows what kind of man he wants to be and can be.

  34. The scheme of the King and Duke was mainly to boost Hucks way of thinking, making him more mature, and making him become a better person. Huck has seen the things the King and Duke do, and sure enough Huck doesn't want to be a part of what they do. One good example that Huck has matured more is when he realizes that he is against slavery and he knows that no one can change his opinion therefore Huck doesn't send the letter to Ms.Watson. ("I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up."). This quote shows how much Hucks maturity has risen by allowing him to make his own actions and by simply standing up for thoughts.

  35. The King and the Duke portrayed obstacles that proved to be Huck's reason to change for the better. They tested Huck's morals and conscience because thier immature actions caused the good side of Huck to take over. In chapter 33 when Huck was retelling the incidents he went through to Tom, he mentions the "Royal Nonesuch rapscallions." At some point hefelt pity for the frauds. Eventually his emotions settled down as if some blanket of relief covered him. As they went back home, Huck reveals that,"I warn't feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to blame...it don't make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person's conscienceain't got no sense, and just goes for him anyway." His guilt affected him for a short period of time, but in the long run, the King and the Duke are what made Huck for what he is now.

  36. I feel the purpose of the King and the Duke are to test, i.e. see if Huck knows right from wrong. They do this through a matter of obstacles and lies they have created. They test his values, one being whether to betray a friend (Jim) even though there will be severe consequences, of let him go and continue his journey. In the end Huck comes to his "senses" and decides not to send the letter to Ms.Watson. His statement "Alright, then, I'll go to hell" this quote shows how much Huck has matured, and how "straight" his morals are.

  37. The Duke and King are the "evil shoulder" in Huck's life, their actions present Huck with challenges that put his moral character to the test. When the King sold Jim for $40, Huck was split between whether to write a letter to Miss Watson to inform her of Jim's location, or to actually try and free Jim. After remembering all of the good times he had with Jim, and thinking of his loyalty, Huck decides to save him. Huck's made up his mind when he says, "All right, then, I'll go to hell" as he tore up the letter. Although the King and the Duke are negative influences on Huck, they've unintentionally matured him. He is responsible and makes morally correct decisions.

  38. The king and duke are there to test huck. Test such as the decision to free his friend from the king or do nothing and write a letter to miss watson. Huck makes the right decision at the end and goes and frees jim and doesnt send the letter. you know he has matured when he says the phrase, " All right then,i'll go to hell" and tore up the letter. Now huck has been making good mature decisions, and his been having many tests and obstacles thanks to the king and the duke.

  39. In my opinion, I believe that the purpose of the Duke and King characters in the novel was to provide Huck with an eye opener to help him realize the difference between right and wrong. They also put his mentallity to the test and Huck follows what he believes is the right action to do. An example would be when Hucks states, "...Cuss you, I can see, now, why you was so anxious to make up the deffersit-". With this quote, you are able to see that Huck now has a more open mind that helps him see the reality to different situations.

  40. The purpose of the King's and Duke's characters was to challenge Huck in choosing the right choice. Huck sees the fraud the King and Duke are doing and tries to give them the slip , but as Huck tries to escape Jim was sold. Huck was going to end his struggles and write Ms. Watson a letter saying where Jim was. But instead he remembers everything him and Jim been together throughout his adventure. "All right, then, I'll go to hell" - and tore it up. This quote shows how Huck made the right choice by not sending the letter and how Huck and Jim's friendship can't be stopped by slavery.

  41. I think the king and duke characters were used in the novel to show as to how much huck has matured and how much his morals have improved. The king and duke were also used to teach huck whats right and whats wrong. he king and duke also are used to test Hucks loyalty to Jim. In the end Huck comes to his senses. Huck then decides decides not to send the letter to Ms.Watson. His statement "Alright, then, I'll go to hell" shows that his morals and traits have grown throughout the novel. He has become more independent and he is now making his own decisions in the novel. The king and Duke tested Huck and they were used to see how much Huck has matured throughout the novel.

  42. The purpose of the King and the Duke Character in this story is to prove that Huck understands more about morals and how much he has grown from the beggining of the novel. Throughout the novel huck has shown a growth in maturity. Huck is no longer a kid he is now a young adult.Hanging out with the King has helped Huck learn that taking money from others is not the right thing to do. Huck as well learns that lying all the time is not the best way to live his life" the truth is better and actually safer than a lie." By this quote Huck understands now that liying wont take him anywhere it is better to say the truth than a lie.

  43. The King and Duke were used or "portrayed" as a test or obstacle to help Huck. He had to deal with all the wrong-doing of the King and Duke and for a second, Huck began to feel like he had been transformed into something like them, but Huck knew he was still the same person as he said "Well, it made me sick to see it; and I was sorry for them poor rascals." Then as everything was blowing over, the reader can conclude that Huck had not changed his conscience due to the line "Se we poked along back home, and I warn't feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to be blame, somehow." Which shows the reader Huck had overcome his "test" and was the same as always.

  44. The purpose of the King and Duke characters are to show how Huck has matured. The King and Duke are an obstacle that Huck has to face in this story. These two characters help Huck mature and become more of a responsible character. When Huck tried to escape Jim was caught and sold. Huck wanted to sent Ms. Watson a letter to tell her where Jim is but he decides to go by his loyalty and friendship to Jim. "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up" this quote shows how he isn't going to let anything in the way of Jim and his friendship not even slavery.

  45. The king and the Duke characters purpose is to show that Huck has matured over the story. They are the ones that make Huck choose whats right from wrong. When the king sold Jim for $40 he has to choose between going after Jim or writing a letter to Miss Watson contact him about Jim's location. But after remembering all the good times with Jim, "i saved him by telling....and said i was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world", he tears the letter and decides to go rescue him. The king and the Duke are the reason why Huck has matured and made his own choices by looking at all the evil and mischief they had done and telling whats right from wrong.

  46. In my opinion I think that the Duke and the King were really just a vessel of experince for Huck. Their purpose was to show Huck how he should responed to his conscience, in a way forcefully grow Hucks morals and show him why he should listen to the way he feel about things more often. In chapter twenty eight huck thinks to himself "I reckon a body that ups and tells the truth when he is in a tight space, is taking considerable many resks, though I ain't had no experince, and can't say for certain; but it looks to me... like the truth is better, and actuly safer..." Out of many quotes this one truely shows that Huck has realized truth is better. Not only here does Huck decide that the truth is better but also in chapter thirty two when he lies to Mrs. Phelps about being Tom. Again realizing that the truth is better huck thinks "I'd got to throw up my hand... here's another place where i got to resk the truth." Once more showing how his morals have successfully grown.

  47. Chapters 30-33, Joshua Messer

The safe assumption of King and Duke are that they are penned into this book to show the scope of maturation of Huck Finn. But one most wonder if it these characters are the inner feelings of what Huck could have become. After Huck exposes King and Duke in earlier chapters, the conmen are able to catch up to Huck and Jim up the river as if Huck is fighting temptation. At this point in the story, Huck has developed an identity, a sense of self worth and has become stronger in morals. His loyalty to Jim is reflected when Huck is reflecting on letter written by him to Ms. Watson stating the location of her runaway slave. Huck When faced with the dilemma of telling where Jim is to Ms. Watson in regards to a letter he wrote, Huck says, “I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: Alright, then, I’ll go to hell” and tore up the letter (Chapter 31). Later, Huck see’s that both Duke and King get tarred and feathered. He is pleased that he is not one of them, pleased at his integrity, and pleased with himself.

  48. Well so it happened to turn out as a benefit for Huck. Within the actions of the King and Duke it gave Huck a better visualization of how to make good intentions. He learned from them situations are best handled when heard from the truth then from a lie, "here's a case where I'm blest if it don't look to me like the truth is better and actually safer than a lie." It definitely made Huck a better self-handling person, much more wiser with his intentions. Even he, himself, understood he had was not much knowledgeable before, "I reckon a body that ups and tells the truth when he is in a tight place, it's taking many risks..though I ain't had no experience", inferring to a different mentality that has came upon himself.

  49. The purpose of the King and the Duke characters were to help Huck know what is right from wrong and to serve a life lesson for him. As he spends time with them, he grows more and more and learns a lot from them. For example when Huck writes the letter to Ms. Watson and would tell her where Jim was he then realizes that it is wrong and would affect their friendship. He then says "All right, then, I'll go to hell" - and tore it up. In this quote it tells the readers that Huck has matured through the experiences he has with the King and Duke and made the right decision.

  50. In previous chapters in the book Huck has not always been the nicest guy, or the one who has always made the right decisions. With the King and Duke characters the author most likely meant for them to show how much Huck has matured from the beginning of the book to these chapters. The King and Duke characters serve as obstacles to Huck in a world on his own. A world seemingly new to him. For Huck to overcome these obstacles, shows that when he is set with a choice whether to do the right or the wrong thing on his own without any outside voice, he is able to do the right thing. The king and duke characters ultimately show that despite Huck's past, he is a good person. For example when Huck states,..."All right then I'll go to hell". This is important because it shows that Huck is willing to go to hell for his friend, and if that is not loyalty and good morals, then I don't know what is. Therefore the experiences he had with the king and duke, led him to do the right thing for Jim. Although society thought it wrong he still did the right thing as a friend and I believe the king and duke are to blame for it.

  52. The purpose of the King and the Duke characters were to test Huck, making him an independent man in deciding what he had felt and believed about slavery. The King and the Duke recognized Jim to the Phelps, therefore, Huck was going to send a letter to Miss Watson confessing that he knew where Jim was staying. Huck started to have realize that he couldn't do that, because Jim was a positive change in his life. In conclusion,Huck realizes that he is against slavery when he decided not to send the letter and thinks, "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up." This shows that Huck can be an individual and think for himself.

  53. The purpose for the Duke and the King being in the book was to teach Huck whats wrong and right and to see his thoughts on slavery. Throughout the chapter they teach Huck what was wrong and right. The same goes for slavery as they wanted to see how Huck thought and felt about slavery. If they werent there Huck would not mature and see how slvery felt.

  54. The purpose of the King and Duke was to help Huck grow as a person and show him the difference between right and wrong. At this point in the story Huck reaches a higher level of understandment due to the roles of the King and Duke. In these chapters Huck says "The truth is better and actually safer than a lie." Huck is now discovering the kind of person he wants to be. He realizes lying is wrong and is starting to think for himself, while making his own decisions.

  55. In my belief the purpose of both the king and the duke was to be some sort of a challenge for Huck to be able over come. Through the series of tricks and lies that Huck had to find the courage and strength to do what was right. I think the pair might have been some kind of metaphor sense of himself on how he was willing to cheat people, but overcame these urges and became a more mature person. As stated by the duke " 'Well-I don't care if I did, I didn't do it, anyway. But you not only had it in mind to do it, but you done it.' " And when the pair had been punished Huck was set free from himself. -Aaron Pingo

  56. The purpose of the Duke and the King’s Characters was to guide Huck on a path where he experienced regret and sympathy for those whom the con men wronged. Throughout this journey, Huck further realizes that his loyalty lied with doing the right thing. For example, when the Duke and the King were talking about breaking into homes, Huck stated that he “wouldn’t have nothing in the world to do with such actions.” After breaking free from the Duke and King for good, Huck quickly matures and takes action when Jim is captured. Although experiencing some doubt and moral dilemmas, Huck ultimately decides not to give up on Jim and continues helping him, despite his belief that he’d surely “go to hell.”

  57. I believe that the king and dukes purpose were to help Huck realize his beliefs about slavery. Huck was going to send a letter to Miss Watson to tell her where Jim was staying. Huck didn't know what to do. He noticed the good Jim had in Hucks life. Huck said. "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, Ill go to Hell" -and tore up." This showed Huck was a powerful person who didnt believe in slavery.

  58. In my opinion, King and Duke's characters purpose was to teach Huck a lesson and to get him grow up. He needed a way of showing that he was maturing and being on his own was making him a better person. Huck states "It didn't seem no good good for me to stay," meaning he realized that he had done wrong and no longer wanted to be a part of what the King and Duke did. The King and Duke's purpose in the book were to somewhat guide him into making the right choices. Even though it took him seeing what the consequences of the bad choices were in order for him to see that he didn't want to live that way, they still served their purpose.

  59. I think the purpose of Duke and the King was to provide Huck with good advice and to help challenge him along the way. Both try to set up obstacles for Huck to over come and and mature in life. For example Huck learned how to be loyal with people and learned how to overcome different situations that involved him making the right decisions and thinking for himself. For example when he says "Alright, then, I'll go to hell" thats Huck making a decision for himself without involving anyone else. Along the way he still supports his good friend Jim even after all the doubts Huck has had about him.

  60. King and Dukes character's purpose was to guide Huck into trouble but instead tested his morals and conscience. Of course King and Dukes character's did so unintentional. Huck begins making better decisions as he has matured. In chapter 33, Huck mentions" It didn't seem no good for me to stay," during the situation of King and Duke. Huck realizes he doesn't have to do what king and duke say and it also conflicted with himself what was the right thing to do.

  61. The reason for the Duke and the King is to show how much Huck has matured and set as a test to see what Huck believed in when dealing with slavery. Huck was going to send a letter to Ms. Watson confessing that he knew where Jim was. "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up". This shows that he chose Jim over everything, because he made such a positive impact of Huck's life, and it shows that he can clearly think for himself.

  62. I think the King and Duke were meant to help Huck grow up a little more. Huck sees all the lying and scamming they do and it makes him realize that's not the life he wants to live. In chapter 31 the full effect of Huck's actions were coming back to haunt him. Huck says "That’s just the way: a person does a low-down thing, and then he don’t want to take no consequences of it. Thinks as long as he can hide, it ain't no disgrace." This is coming from him seeing how the King and Duke scam innocent people, then run away from the problem and forget about it. This is a major realization Huck has that's playing with is sanity. If the King and Duke never came along, Huck's maturity would have still been stuck at him not turning in a runaway slave and not how all his actions added up since he faked his own death.

  63. The King and Duke characters, in my opinion, were a way to change his personality through tough decisions he had to go through while with the King and Duke, which all change him through his adventures. Decisions like turning in Jim, conning people, and saving the girls money. He's changed ever since he's gone all on his own, found Jim, and gone with the King and Duke. For example, he changes from being self-centered to considered and shifts his opinion on slavery, even willing to risk going to Hell for someone else which he does when he decides not to send the letter to Miss Watson about Jim. "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, Ill go to Hell" -and tore up."

  64. I believe the King and Duke were included in the story to help expose Huck to the world around him. The realization of how big of a deal slavery was helped Huck mature by allowing him to make his own opinions and decisions by himself. He had the option of revealing Jim's location to Ms. Watson but he instead "...tore [the letter] up..." and said "alright, then, I'll go to hell". Jim had become his friend along his journey and, although the "rules" of slavery opposed his decision, he chose Jim's freedom.

  66. The Duke and the King seem to have a negative impact on Huck and Jim, for example wanting to send Jim back to Miss. Watson but that is where the purpose of the King and Duke contribute to Huck's journey. Huck realized that after coming to realization that the King and Duke are fraudulent towards Mary Jane, that they aren't the right people to trust. This gave Huck the maturity boost he needed because he wasn't either going to get rid of Jim, who he traveled with for so long. For instance when the King and Duke were trying to convince Huck to send out a letter to Jim's original owner, Miss. Watson and turn him in. "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up", this proved that he could make his own decisions and he doesn't need anyone to tell him what to do. In result, The Duke and King were there for an "eye opener" towards Huck, but as well as a distraction to keep traveling north. Huck was old enough to mold himself into a independent young man, not needing the dependence of anyone

  69. The intent for the King and Duke was to try and help figure out what to do in a strategical problem. When Huck is given the choice to send the letter to Miss. Watson about the whereabouts of Jim. Going through this options Huck seems to question his own self."I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself:"Alright, then, I'll go to hell"- and tore it up", in this doing, it shows that he is mature enough to make his own decisions. Huck about to send a letter to Miss Watson, informing her about Jim's location but said, "All right then, I'll go to hell" and decided to rescue Jim. I think the Duke and the King began to show Huck more about how people can be cruel. In page 210 Huck thinks, "Humans beings can be awful cruel to one another.", so I think they were there to make Huck realize more what is morally right as opposed to what is ethically right. Huck is now more able to know what he feels is right, and that is to set his friend, Jim, free.

When Huck confessed everything that had happened with him and Jim because he was terrified of The King and Duke was a point where he realized it was time to mature and be honest for the better. For example when Huck was demanded by "Quick, then, and tell us what was your idea, or I'll shake the insides out o' you!" Huck rapidly replied with "Honest, I'll tell you everything, just as it happened, your majesty!". In the end he realized what he did was the right thing to do for him and Jim all because of a lesson he learned from The King and Duke with Huck not even realizing it.

He followed what he thought was right even though it might hurt him later in life. ”All right then I'll go to hell...” He accepted the fact that he might go to hell just for helping his friend and others. He wanted to do good even though in his eyes he thought it might be bad. ”Human beings can be awful cruel...” He knew there were people who were bad, yet he knew there were good people as well. "And so I'd better write a letter to Tom Sawyer and tell him to tell Miss Watson where he was. But I soon give up the notion, for two things: she'd be mad and disgusted this rasacality and ungratefulness for leaving her, and so she'd sell him straight down the river again; and if she didn't everybody naturally despises an ungrateful nigger" Huck was dealing with a sensitive and very mature case involving his friends life causing him to grow up even more.

Huck insists that the right thing for him to do is not turn in Jim, the runaway slave. The quote "alright then, I'll go to hell" shows Huck's continued insistence on not turning Jim in and being able to speak his mind which is against slavery. Without the King and Duke characters having influence on Huck, he would not be able to do what he feels is right, or he would have a different idea of what is right. Huck would instead, continue on with his old ways and the morals of his upbringing. The change in Huck shows that he is now equipped to make decisions that reflect his new and refined way of thinking. He is also able to choose his friend over any sort of reward. 82. The King and the Dukes role within this novel serves several purposes. First it shows the reader the drastic character change that Huck has made and how far he has grown since the start of this novel. I strongly believe that if Huck had not met the king and duke that he would have sent the letter to Ms. Watson instead of trying to save Jim. But due to the fact that he has grown as a person he chooses to save Jim. I also believe the writers intent with putting these two men in Hucks life was to illustrate the internal battle Hucks is facing when it comes to what's wrong and right about slavery. Jim is slave and Huck has been raised to have certain feelings toward slaves, however Jim is someone Huck can trust and its taken Jim to be sold for Huck to realize Jim is his friend.

  83. I believe the King and the Duke roles was important because it helped understand Huck's point of view towards slavery and his friendship with Jim. Huckelberry continues to helping him, despite his belief that he’d surely “go to hell", which shows that Huck has learned to think for himself and that he is willing to pay for the consequences of his own actions (chapter 33).In my opinion, the King and Duke are there to set up "obstacles" for Huck, to help him mature in life during his journey. For example, when the Duke and the King were talking about breaking into peoples homes, Huck stated his opinion that he “wouldn't have nothing in the world to do with such actions". Showing that Huck knows what to do when he is confronted with difficult decisions between whats right and whats wrong. The King and the Duke where there to help Huck grow up a little and mature. They also help Huck into thinking for himself (without being selfish), be a little wiser and be more independent. In chapter 33, Huck states "It didn't seem no good for me to stay," during the situation of King and Duke when they decide to hustle and lye to people to obtain there money. Following the same chapter, when the King and Duke were trying to convince Huck to send out a letter to Jim's original owner,(Miss. Watson) and turn him in. "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up". 85. The king and the duke were used as an obstacle that Huck had to face to learn right from wrong. Huck experiencing the king and duke's deception helped Huck mature in a way that wouldn't have happened without those characters. Huck realizes Jim is a big part of his life now. "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up.", the quote shows how Huck is showing that he knows what is right and wrong morally due to the experience he gained from the king and dukes deception.

  86. The King and the Duke were tests for Huck. They were used as a distraction on Huck's plan but also as a stepping stone into a more mature mindset. Huck was meant to eventually become hard towards these two characters and he did. Huck demonstrates his hard feelings by saying " ... and after all we'd done for them scoundrels, here was it all come to nothing, everything all busted up and ruined, because they could have the heart to serve Jim such a trick as that, and make him a slave again all his life, and amongst strangers, too, for forty dirty dollars." Before the King and Duke came along Huck thought he was a pretty bad person. These two characters came to show that Huck isn't that bad after all. They gave Huck a sense of right and wrong and heightened his morals. Huck learned how to choose right and wrong through these two influential characters. After meeting them Huck can decide for himself what he believes is right, and what he wants to do. However, when the King and Duke demanded he told them his plans, he gave in and said "Honest, I'll tell you everything, just as it happened, your majesty!". 89. The difference between the boys is the way thy like getting things done. Huck wants to go straight to the point. While on the other hand Tom wants to make a big Long plan to save Jim. Tom wants to be the one getting fame and credit for his plan. Huck really just wants to gt it over and done and that is the easier way to do things .

  90. The purpose of the King and Duke characters was to help Huck find within himself the difference between right and wrong. In other words, Huck learned more about slavery and knew that something had to be done. The King and the Duke were tests for Huck. They were used as a distraction on Huck's plan but also as a stepping stone into a more mature mindset. Then, Huck was old enough to mold himself into a independent young man, not needing the dependence of anyone

  92. From my point of view, I believe that the King and Duke were placed in the book to make Huck's life more difficult. If he had never encountered them, Huck wouldn't have had the obstacles that he faced. He never would have made mistakes and learned from them if it wasn't for these two certain frauds. As Huck spends more and more time with the King and Duke, he realizes that he wants to be better than them. When Huck says in chapter 31, he and Jim "made an agreement that we wouldn't have nothing in the world to do with such actions", the reader can tell that Huck does not want to be a part of that life anymore. He has grown so much and matured in such a little amount of time. His judgment is only getter better and I don't think he realizes himself how grown-up he is. He still tries to convince himself that his decisions are based on the way Jim has treated him and how he must return back the kindness, but in reality, he has become a genuinely good natured person.

  93. My opinion is that I think the King and Duke were made to make Hucks life better. They helped him in many ways. They helped him have a better relationship with Jim and they also helped him find out how to distinguish right and wrong. For example in this quote "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself; Alright then, ill go to hell and tore it up." This shows that Huck is being more mature. This is how they helped him.

  94. I personality think that the King and Duke were suppose to make Huck into a man (mature), they didn't though at least not on purpose. Huck had a choice to say or not to say something about slavery to the King and Duke. He had to decision to tell where Jim is staying but, at the end when Huck had trouble figuring it out. Huck wouldn't tell no body where Jim was staying because that's the way that Huck felt. -Bobbi Cordle

  95. I personally think that the duke and the king are like hucks test to become a good person like when he told the sisters that they were impersonating the wilks bros so he the duke and the king are like the people that show him whats right from wrong (mostly wrong ) and mostly they make him more morraly mature like this phrase ( You can't pray a lie I found that out) si hes been maturing from seeing the king and the duke do wrong things

  96. I believe that the overall purpose and reason for Huck ever meeting the Dauphin and the Duke has had a somewhat good effect on Huck because Huck in the beginning learns of course right from wrong and he applies that to his vast amount of decision making and responsibility that he will (in these 3 chapters) encounter. Jim suddenly disappears and Huck soon finds out that he was captured by Silas Phelps and Huck has to decide whether to write a letter to Miss Watson informing her where Jim is at OR he can set off in yet another sketchy attempt to save Jim from his fate. One thing i should point out is that he is reunited with his long lost friend, Tom Sawyer. When he discovers that Jim has been captured by Tom Sawyers relative, he approaches Tom to ask him if he can help get Jim back. I am shocked that Tom agrees to get Jim back considering the fact that he is a slave and this was truly unlawful at the time. Huck learned a whole lot about decision making while applying good and bad and in conclusion decides to save Jim, sometimes you just have to say "screw it". He had the decision on Jim's fate once again. "All right then, I'll go to hell!", he resolves here to "steal Jim about of slavery."

The purpose of the king and duke characters are mainly to help huck to do the right thing. They define what huck didn't want to be like a cheater, liar and mostly a bad friend. He rather not lie to god and instead he does what is right. He still helps jim scape eve if its against society. He is know more mature thanks to the king and the duke.

  99. I believe that the King and Duke were there to support the fact that Huck is maturing mentally other than at the beginning of the book. No matter how the situation affects him, he still understands the difference between right and wrong. Such as how he intends to free Jim from slavery. Huck knows the trouble he could get into, but he chooses to ignore these thoughts and helps his friend in need. He also shows this maturity when he tells the truth about the King and Duke to Mary Jane. Although the King and Duke swindled people out of their money, Huck finally realized he needed to do something these two characters.

  101. I believe the duke and the kings purpose was to not only show right from wrong but also superstition. I say this because after the duke and the king tried to steal the wilks sisters money and finally got huck to tell them where the money was they turned on eachother. The duke states "don't you revkon I know who hid that money in that coffin?" And the king says " yes sir! I know you do know because you done it yourself!" The duke states "its a lie" and starts to hold the king by his throat. To me this show the king and the dukes reasoning for being in the book

Huck says"It didn't seem no good good for me to stay,".That is when you see that he now knows he was doing bad.Huck need to learn that for every wrong thing he does there is consequences and he was to deal with them. The kings and Duke helped Huck also with Jim relationship.I would be more than thankful!

  104. The purpose of the king and duke in thia story is to help Huck on his decisions about slavery. Teach him right from wrong. Huvk was convinsed on sending Ms. Watson a letter telling her where Jim was. Huck found out that wasn't a right choice. The book says "steal Jim from slavery." The King and Duke made a big change in Hucks life.

  107. The Duke and The king purpose was to test Hucks loyalty and morales as they create a hard situation to put Huck in. As they try to convince to send out the letter to turn Huck in Huck begins to think on what he believes in the right thing to do. While he does consider turning in jim for the reward in cash. He begins to remember everything he has been through with jim and their true friendship. This is where he makes his decision and doesn't turn in jim by stating "alright then ill go to hell"

  108. The King and The duke have the purpose of making Huck really think about if he should turn in Jim or if he should keep the promise and loyality he has towards Jim. In chapter 31, page 194-195, Huck was so close to radding out Jim and writes a letter to Miss Watson, but after having too many thoughts, the book says, "I was trembling, because i got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and i knowed it." Then Huck says to himself, ""All right then, I'll go to hell"—and tore it up." After reading that part, you can clearly see that Huck decides to stay true to his friend and keep him safe from the law. He is very mature for keeping his promise. The Duke and The King helped Huck decide what he was going to do with Jim.

  109. The purpose that the King and Duke served where as the test of Huck in which what kind of person he is. They have unintentionally helped Huck learn to do his own actions. Without them two, Huck wouldn't be as changed as he is now. An example would be when Huck doesn't send the letter to Ms.Watson about the whereabouts of Jim. Jim has taught Huck a lot of his knowledge and has be a great friend of his. Through all the bad the King and Duke have done, Huck distinguished their wrong and right as well as their good and bad and took action to what he believes.

  110. The purpose of the Duke and King characters were to make sure that Huck was doing the right things. Huck says, "All right then, I'll go to hell." This shows that Huck is overcoming all obstacles that are put in his way, so he is in fact doing the right things and maturing.

  111. I think that the king and the duke, unintentionally, had a lot to do with Huck’s conscious decisions and the difference between what was right from wrong. Huck had to have been smart and strong to not be deceived by these men and in doing so he was able to do good for others around him, such as Jim. When Huck realized that Jim had been sold by one of the filthy, money hungry frauds, Huck, panicking over a new dilemma, thought long and hard for a solution; and decided to write to Miss Watson, Jim’s owner, about the whereabouts of Jim. As he continued to ponder over his decision he thought about what could happen to his friend, “But I soon give up that notion, for two things: she’d be…disgusted at his rascality and ungratefulness for leaving her and so she’d sell him straight down the river again; and if she didn’t, everybody naturally despises an ungrateful nigger, and they’d make Jim feel it all the time, and so he’d feel… disgraced.” Huck then stands up for what he ultimately believes is right and dismisses the thought of slavery more or less because of the king and dukes unmoral decisions. His heavy conscious gets the best of him and does good, for not only his own well being, but for Jim’s as well.

  112. The King and The Duke play an important role in the novel. They make Huck realize that he doesnt want to be bad like them. Huck speaks to Jim and says,"We turned it over and over, and at last we made up our minds they was going to break into somebody's house or store, or was going into counterfeit-money business, or something. So then we was pretty scared, and made up an agreement that we wouldn't have nothing in the world to do with such actions...". Huck and Jim realize that they don't want to be with the King and the Duke.

  113. In my opinion, the King and the Duke are a challenge to Huck. They were there to test him. For example, they ripped people off and lied about who they were but Huck went and did the right thing, turned them in and got the money back. Also when they sold Jim, Huck needs to decide whether he tells Miss Watson where he's at or going to save him, and at last, he builds up the courage to go save him by himself. Therefore implying that the King and the Duke helped Huck become a better, more mature person.

  114. I believe that the purpose of the duke and the king where to make Huck realize that at some point he has to grow up and be more responsible. The duke and king are somewhat a reflection of huke when he would tell lies and cause trouble.chapter 30 the Duke says to Huck, "Well, you just own up, first, that you did hide that money there, intending to give me the slip one of these days, and come back and dig it up and have it all to yourself." The Duke is trying to get an answer out of Huck to see what he plans to do. He wants to see if he can get the truth out of Huck. In the end theey just ended up helping him.

  115. The purpose of the king and duke was to teach Huck how to step up and do the right thing. There characters are clearly bad which Huck notices already when they lie about being a duke and a king and throughout their journey Huck realizes how foolish they are and that they're just out for money. He steps up and fixes things by doing the right thing and him and Jim come to a conclusion that they don't want to be like the duke and the king and try to get rid of them -Dominique Briddell

  116. The reason why the author inserted the king and the duke is because they are the test of Huck deciding whether he will do good or bad. They rip people off just to make easy money and Huck's new that that was naturally wrong. This is the kind of thing that makes him grow into a better person.

It makes him realize he is antislavery. He then decides to not send the letter to Miss Watson and thinks, "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to himself: "Alright then, I'll go to hell." - and tore it up." 120. I feel like the King and the Duke are symbols that symbolize Hucks maturity. He is put in a test in which he has to think about what is the right thing to and what is the wrong thing to do. Huck was going to send a letter to Miss Watson to confess to her where Jim was staying, but then realized that he would not dare to do that so he tore the paper up in pieces and said "alright then, Ill go to hell". It was no longer the fact that he saw Jim as part of his family, it was the fact that he was against slavery. Huck is not only maturing but is becoming a better person.

They make him grow as a person by learning from them. 123. To Huck, the king and the duke’s characters are there to fill the purpose of Huck maturing and choosing good from bad. Huck writes a letter to Miss Watson saying where Jim is being held. He thought that if he did so, he would be clean and able to pray, but instead he began to think. “And got to thinking over our trip down the river; and I see Jim before me, all the time, in the day, and in the nighttime, sometimes moonlight, sometimes storm, and we a floating along, talking, and singing, and laughing. But somehow I couldn't seem to strike no places to harden me against him, but only the other kind” He thinks about how Jim considered him his best friend. “I studied it a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: “All right, then, I’ll go to hell”-and tore it up.”

Looking and how The King and Duke were, he knew he didn't want to end up like them and how they are. 128. The purpose of the Duke and the King characters were to show the reader how willing Huck was to get through the obstacles they caused. Huck really didn't want any problems to begin with because he knew they weren't real Kings and Dukes from the start. Huck just didn't want any trouble in his journey with Jim. For example quote from the book page 243, " Why, that's just what I was agoing to ask your GRACE" I put grace in all capitals because at this time in the story Huck wants nothing to do with the Duke and King. He only shows respect and still treats them as Duke and King even though there dirt poor and drunk and etc., because he knows it will help him to find Jim. He doesn't want any problems with them he just wants to find Jim and keep on his journey to freedom.

He is beginning to be independant, and making his own decisions based on morals. Which is very good, you can begin to see this change when Huck tears a letter he wrote for Mrs.Watson as seen, "I studied a minute, sort of holding my breathe, and then says to myself: "Alright, then, I'll go to hell"-and tore it up". He does what he thinks is best for him and the people around him. He is begginign to go against slavery and see the wrong behind it even though it is seen as right at that period of time.

  131. The king and duke characters were a kind of a form of obstacle making huck decide which path was the best for him to take. to see if he was realy mature enough of=r if he still needed even more mturity. In chapter 31, "...it made me shiver. And i about made up my mind to pray; and see if i couldn't try to quit being the kind of a boy i was, and be better... I was letting on to give up sin, but away inside of me i was holding on to the biggest one of all. I was trying to make my mouth say i would do the right thing and the clean thing, an go and write to that nigger's owner and tell where he was; but deep down in me i knowed it was a lie - and He knowed it." this quote means that he had seriously tried on giving Jim's where abouts but as soon as he realised it wasnt the right thing huck decided on helping his friend out. this shows that that huck is strong enough to become obsticles that may be difficult, but huck has the courage and strength to do it.

  133. I think that the Duke and the King play a very important part in the novel. For all I know the pair could have been some kind of metaphorical sense of himself on the inside of how he could have been willing to cheat people, but ignored these urges and become more mature. The characters of the king and the duke throughout the last chapters helped Huck find his inner self.

  134. The King and the Duke's significance in the story was to challenge Huck's abilities to make choices and perceive the difference between right and wrong. They also help Huck to realize the importance of a true friendship with Jim that he could not jeopardize by sending a letter to miss Watson. He said, "Alright, then, I'll go to hell' and tore up the letter showing that he could not break the promise that was formed by Huck and Jim early in the story. He also realized that sometimes going against society to do what is right is better then to be restricted by law and go against his own beliefs. This is one of major morals he has learned up to this put on.

  135. It seems like the King and Duke are trying to see what kind of choices Huck makes. The King and Duck send both Jim and Huck to give a letter to Mrs. Watson, to let her know where Jim was staying. Huck realized that Jim is such a great influence on him and didn't know what to do. He decided to not give her the letter and he said "alright, then, i'll go to hell" It shows how much courage, guts, and strength he has to make a right choice.

  136. The king and the Duke character's were to help Huck use his knowledge and for him to decide what he actually felt and follow the correct path. As more time he spends with the King and the Duke, he realizes something had to be done. "And I about made up my mind to pray, and see if i couldn't try to quit being the kind of boy i was and be better" This also shows in how Huck doesn't want to lie anymore and in how he wants to be more aware on what he decides and do.

  137. The purpose of the King and Dule characters, were to help push Huck into being a better person. After seeing them take advantage of the Wilks girls, it shows how Huck is learning to choose right from wrong. For example, when Huck is deciding whether to turn Jim in or help him, Huck still hasn't developed his sense of right from wrong. Huck states, "My conscience got to stirring me up hotter than ever, until at last I says to it? "Let up on me - it ain't to late, yet - ill paddle ashore at the first light, and tell."

    ReplyDelete
  138. The King and the Duke are relevant to the way Huck matures, not just because they put Huck in situations that helped him gain a sense of right and wrong, but because in those same situations Huck was forced to realize there are consequences to staying neutral, one of them being guilt. Initially it made more sense to Huck to allow the King and the Duke to travel with them than to make enemies with scum, “then you don’t have no quarrels, and don’t get into no trouble. “ Ironically it was because of the King and the Duke, however, that Huck was faced with obstacles like deciding whether or not to help the Wilks sisters and deciding whether or not to help Jim. When Huck says, “I [will] steal Jim [back] out of slavery,” it becomes evident that by providing Huck with dilemmas he can’t bear to stay passive in, such as putting Jim’s fate in his hands, he has to grow up.
